Why test and tag matters
It also gives you a dated record. If there is ever an incident, a current test register and tagged equipment show that you have taken reasonable steps to keep people safe, which is exactly what insurers, safety inspectors and body corporate committees look for.
- Shared equipmentCleaners’ gear, common-room appliances or tools kept on site by a body corporate.
- Busy workplacesOffices, kitchens and workshops where equipment is used by many people every day.
- Expired or missing tagsItems that are overdue, untagged or were never added to a register.
- Damaged leads and plugsCuts, kinks, exposed wires, scorch marks or loose plug pins.
How often equipment should be tested
AS/NZS 3760 sets the inspection and testing intervals based on the environment equipment is used in. The harsher the conditions, the more often it needs testing. Most of our customers fall into a 6 or 12-monthly cycle, and we will recommend the right interval for each area of your site.
| Environment | Examples | Typical interval |
|---|---|---|
| Construction and demolition | Building sites, renovations, demolition work | 3 months |
| Hire equipment | Tools and appliances hired out to others | Inspected before each hire, tested every 3 months |
| Manufacturing and workshops | Factories, workshops, maintenance areas | 6 months |
| Commercial cleaning | Vacuums, polishers and other cleaning equipment | 6 months |
| Hostile environments | Equipment exposed to flexing, damage, dust or moisture | 12 months |
| Residential-type areas | Hotels, motels, boarding houses and similar | 2 years |
| Non-hostile environments | Offices and similar areas where cords are not flexed or damaged | Up to 5 years |
Queensland rules for certain work
In Queensland, the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 sets mandatory testing for electrical equipment used in some types of work, including construction, manufacturing, amusement, rural industry and service work such as cleaning. If your business does this kind of work, tell us when you book and we will test to the required schedule.
What the tag colours mean
Every item that passes gets a durable tag showing the date of the test, the next test due date and who did the work. On construction sites, where equipment is tested every three months, a colour code makes it easy to spot overdue gear at a glance.
Outside construction, the colour matters less than the dates on the tag and your register. Items that fail are removed from service, labelled as faulty, and either repaired by our electricians or replaced. Nothing that fails is left in use.
What our test and tag service includes
- LEADLead inspectionChecking the full length of the cord for cuts, crushing, kinks and exposed conductors.
- PLUGPlug inspectionLooking for cracks, bent or loose pins, scorch marks and signs of overheating.
- EARTHEarth continuityTesting that the earth path is sound on Class I (earthed) equipment.
- INSInsulation testMeasuring insulation resistance or leakage current to make sure it is safe to touch.
- POLPolarityChecking extension leads and cord sets are wired the right way round.
- OPOperationPlugging the item in and confirming it works as it should.
- RCDPortable RCDsTesting portable safety switches and power boards with RCD protection.
- FIXRepairsReplacing plugs and other minor parts on the spot where it is safe to do so.
- REGRegisterA record of every item tested, its result and its next due date.
Earthed and double-insulated equipment
Not every appliance is tested the same way. Class I equipment has a metal case connected to earth, so we test the earth path as well as the insulation. Class II equipment is double insulated, marked with a square-in-a-square symbol, and has no earth pin to test, so the focus is on insulation and the condition of the lead and case. Extension leads and power boards get their own polarity and continuity checks, because a wiring fault in one lead can affect everything plugged into it.

How a test and tag visit works
- QuoteTell us roughly how many items you have and where they are. We can give a same-day onsite quote.
- ScheduleWe book a time that suits you, including working around staff, tenants or residents.
- Inspect & testEach item is visually inspected and electrically tested to AS/NZS 3760.
- Tag or fixPassed items are tagged. Minor faults are repaired on the spot, and unsafe items are taken out of service.
- ReportYou receive a register of every item, its result and the next due date.
Combine it with other compliance work
Many of our body corporate clients book test and tag alongside emergency lighting testing, smoke alarm checks and thermal imaging, so the committee has one visit and one set of records.
Keep your register current
A tag on its own is not enough. We keep a record of what was tested and when it is next due, so you are not left trying to remember. We will remind you when the next round comes up.
Before we arrive
- Gather portable itemsLeads, power boards and tools stored in cupboards or vehicles are easy to miss.
- Plan for shared equipmentLet staff know which items will be briefly unplugged, such as computers or kitchen appliances.
- Give accessPlant rooms, pool areas, gyms and storerooms often hold equipment that needs testing.
- Have your last registerIf you were tested before, we can carry the records forward.
Test and tag FAQs
What does test and tag mean?
It is the process of visually inspecting and electrically testing portable electrical equipment, such as appliances, power tools and extension leads, then attaching a tag that records the test date, the next due date and who did the test.
Is test and tag a legal requirement?
Workplaces and body corporates must manage electrical risks, and testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted way to do it. In Queensland, the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 makes testing mandatory for equipment used in certain work, such as construction, manufacturing and service work.
How often do I need to test and tag?
It depends on the environment. Construction equipment is tested every 3 months, workshops and cleaning equipment every 6 months, and many other workplaces every 12 months. Low-risk office equipment can go longer. We will recommend the right interval for your site.
What happens if an item fails?
It is removed from service and labelled as faulty. Where it is safe and practical, we replace plugs or other minor parts on the spot and retest. Otherwise the item should be replaced.
Does a body corporate need test and tag?
If the body corporate owns or supplies electrical equipment in common areas, such as cleaning equipment, pool and plant room gear or common-room appliances, it should be tested and tagged. See our body corporate compliance checklist for the other items committees should keep on track.
Will testing disrupt my business?
Each item is only unplugged for a short time. We can work around your staff and peak times so the impact is minimal.
