Thermal Imaging
Do you need Thermal Imaging completed on your switchboard? Here at Fully Wired Electrical we have trained qualified technicians to provide you with thermal imaging solutions. By utilising infrared technology, we are able to see what can’t be seen with the naked eye. Specifically, our cameras detect temperature anomalies that are often referred to as “hot spots” in the electrical system. These “hot spots” can become electrical faults, which once identified, can be rectified before imminent or future breakdowns and/or catastrophic failures occur.
Discover the Unseen
Thermal imaging of electrical systems is an excellent proactive strategy for mitigating costly breakdowns and catastrophic failures. Thermal cameras have the technology to detect infrared radiation (hotspots) emitting or accumulating excessive heat, allowing for the creation of images based on their temperature differences. Thermal imaging enables users to identify potential hazards & hotspots within a switchboard. Thermal imaging provides a unique perspective, allowing us to uncover unseen details that could prevent future breakdowns and/or catastrophic failures.
By utilising infrared technology, we are able to see what can’t be seen with the naked eye. At Fully Wired Electrical we are lucky enough to have inhouse qualified technicians allowing us to provide this crucial service.

Infrared energy does not pass through glass, plastic, metallic doors and escutcheon panels and for accurate results should be removed to expose electrical terminals at the time of testing. We will remove these panels when safe to do so however in some circumstances this will not be possible. In other instances, a lock is fitted to main electrical isolators preventing the switchboard panel from opening without disconnecting power to switchboard. We will not shut down power to the site for testing without being advised to do so.
Our reports will provide normal and infrared images, temperature differentials of measured areas, priority ratings and recommended actions based on our findings of the inspected components.
Our results and recommendations are based on the Australian Standards AS/NZS 3000-2007 Section 3 and AS/NZS 3439.1 2002 – Clause 7.3 & 8.2.1 (Operating /Limiting Temperatures).
It is strongly advised to action the repair works based on the time frames provided in our report.
While any electrician can learn to perform a thermal scan, it is important to know a trained & qualified thermal imaging electrician is required to undergo this task. Thermal scanning involves the use of specialised infrared cameras & intricate fault reports provide to the client.
Switchboards are required to be visually inspected by the Australian Standards AS3019:2007. Currently there is no specified regular time interval for inspection, however it is generally recommended by building auditors to have them inspected at least every 24 months. Switchboards are a critical piece of infrastructure, and faults can easily develop within this 24-month timeframe. Therefore, we strongly encourage owners and committees to have them inspected every 12 months.
Hot spots are an area or component within the switchboard that is emitting or accumulating excessive heat. The excess heat can indicate potential issues such as overloading, loose connections, faulty components, or inadequate ventilation. These “hot spots” can lead to electrical downtime or catastrophic failure if they are not identified and rectified in time.
Switchboard inspections are great but are only limited by what an electrician can see. The unique camera is able to pick up heated areas or “hot spots” which cannot be seen by the naked eye. Even though the Australian law does not require thermal scans to be done, owners and residents alike benefit from being able to be proactive in identifying potential electrical concerns and acting on them before they become major or costly.
