Switchboard Upgrade for Residential Complex
A member of the committee for this residential complex contacted us after arranging a switchboard inspection through another contractor – and needed our expertise and advice.
Non Compliant Switchboard:
While the inspection found the switchboard to be operational, it also highlighted several areas that should be upgraded. The existing switchboard still contained rewireable fuses, the meter panel no longer met current requirements, and parts of the chipboard backing board had started to deteriorate with age.
After discussing the options with the committee, the decision was made to replace the existing switchboard and bring the installation up to current standards.
Professional Solution:
The original timber switchboard enclosure was removed and replaced with a new lockable weatherproof metal enclosure. We also removed the old fuse protection and installed modern circuit breakers and safety switches to improve protection for residents and electrical equipment.
As part of the works, the MDF backing panel associated with the original switchboard was also replaced. Although it was still in service, it was showing signs of age and replacement made sense while the switchboard upgrade was being carried out.
One of the challenges with upgrading older switchboards is that modern enclosures are often a different size to the originals. Once the new switchboard had been installed, there was exposed brickwork left around the opening from the old enclosure.
To finish the installation neatly, we supplied and fitted custom powder-coated metal infill panels to cover the exposed areas. This provided a clean finish while protecting the surrounding wall from weather and future deterioration.
The completed upgrade has provided the complex with a modern, compliant switchboard equipped with circuit breaker and safety switch protection, while also improving the overall appearance of the installation.
