Infrared Technology and Switchboards – Why you need them

THERMAL IMAGING HIGHLIGHTS THE ISSUES YOU CAN’T SEE

Hidden faults can be detected early with a noninvasive safety check – using a thermal camera to identify concerns within a switchboard.

HOW DOES A THERMAL CAMERA WORK?

By utilising infrared technology we are able to see what can’t be seen with the naked eye. Specifically, our cameras detect temperature anomalies that are often referred to as “hot spots” in the electrical system. These “hot spots” can become electrical faults, which once identified, can be rectified before imminent or future breakdowns and/or catastrophic failures occur.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD AN ELECTRICAL THERMAL SCAN BE DONE?

Thermal imaging of electrical systems is an excellent proactive strategy for mitigating costly breakdowns and catastrophic failures. Whilst there is no standard on times frames for inspection we recommend every 6 months for industrial, commercial and high rise applications and 12 months for domestic applications. WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS TO A THERMAL SCAN?

Infrared energy does not pass through glass, plastic, metallic doors and escutcheon panels and for accurate results should be removed to expose electrical terminals at the time of testing. We will remove these panels when safe to do so however in some circumstances this will not be possible. In other instances, a lock is fitted to main electrical isolators preventing the switchboard panel from opening without disconnecting power to switchboard. We will not shut down power to the site for testing without being advised to do so.

WHAT RESULTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS CAN I EXPECT FROM THE REPORT?

Our reports will provide normal and infrared images, temperature differentials of measured areas, priority ratings and recommended actions based on our findings of the inspected components. Our results and recommendations are based on the Australian Standards AS/NZS 3000-2007 Section 3 and AS/NZS 3439.1 2002 – Clause 7.3 & 8.2.1 (Operating /Limiting Temperatures). It is strongly advised to action the repair works based on the time frames provided in our report.

ARE ALL ELECTRICIANS LICENCED TO DO A THERMAL SCAN?

Only electricians who have been trained in the use of the thermal camera and reading of the results can provide an accredited compliance report suitable for insurance purposes. Our team are certified and have over 5 years experience in thermal scanning, plus over 20 years in commercial and body corporate switchboards. Our services always include a summary and recommendations as well as a compliance report for your records.
