Is your home EV-ready? The compliance checklist
A charger draws a big load for hours on end. That is why the install has to meet the Wiring Rules and network requirements, and not just be screwed to a wall.
Dedicated, protected circuit
Each charger runs on its own correctly sized circuit, with an RCD suited to EV charging. That means a Type B device, or a charger with built-in DC fault detection paired with the right RCD.
Room and rating
We confirm your board has space and your main cable and supply can carry the extra load. If not, a switchboard upgrade or load management is the safe answer.
Network requirements
Depending on the charger rating and your supply, Energex may need to be notified or may set conditions, especially for three-phase units. We handle the paperwork.

EV charger installation FAQs
How long does an EV charger installation take?
Most home installations take two to four hours once the charger is on site. Jobs with long cable runs, trenching or a switchboard upgrade take longer, and we tell you that when we quote.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade?
Not always. If your board has space, modern protection and enough supply capacity, we can add the circuit directly. Older fuse boards or full boards usually need an upgrade to add a 32 amp circuit safely.
Can I charge from my solar panels?
Yes. Solar-aware chargers measure what your system is exporting and send that energy to the car first. You will get the most benefit if you are home during the day or can plug in on weekends.
Will any charger work with my car?
Most chargers sold in Australia use the Type 2 connector that nearly all current EVs accept, including Tesla models sold here. We check your car’s onboard charging limit so the charger is sized correctly.
Do I need three-phase power?
No. A single-phase 7 kW charger suits most homes and daily driving. Three-phase only helps if your home already has it and your car accepts faster AC charging.
Does Energex need to approve my charger?
It depends on the charger rating and your existing supply. Larger and three-phase installations are more likely to need notification or conditions. We check and handle this as part of the job.
Can you install a charger in a unit or townhouse complex?
Yes, with body corporate approval. Shared car parks often need a separate circuit from your unit’s meter or a sub-metered solution. We can quote for one bay or the whole complex.
