Is Your Switchboard in the Right Location?

A Guide to Single Street Frontage Homes

Many homeowners don’t realise that the location of their switchboard is just as important as the switchboard itself. If your meter board isn’t installed in an accessible and compliant position, it can create delays for electricity work, additional costs when upgrading your electrical system, and even issues with Energex requirements or insurance claims.

The Queensland Electricity Connection Manual includes several examples of acceptable meter board locations for homes with a single street frontage. The diagrams below show common scenarios and where the switchboard should be positioned to allow safe and convenient access.

Speaking with a qualified, experienced Switchboard Electrician will help provide advise on what you need and what your options are based on your home.

These diagrams have been taken directly from the Australian Standards AS3000 and are used to help determine which apply to your home.

Where should my switchboard be located?

Your switchboard should be installed in a location that is safe, easily accessible and compliant with Energex and Queensland electricity requirements. It should be positioned where authorised electricity workers can safely access it without obstruction. If you’re unsure whether your switchboard is compliant, a licensed electrician can inspect it and provide advice.

Why is switchboard accessibility important?

A switchboard needs to be accessible so electricity distributors such as Energex can safely disconnect or reconnect power, install smart meters, perform maintenance and respond during emergencies. Difficult access can delay electrical work and may result in additional costs if the switchboard needs to be relocated.

Will I need to move my switchboard when upgrading to a smart meter?

Not always. However, if your existing switchboard or meter board is in a location that no longer meets current Energex requirements, it may need to be relocated before a smart meter can be installed. A licensed electrician can assess your existing installation and explain what is required.

Can I relocate my existing switchboard?

Yes. In many cases, an existing switchboard can be relocated to a compliant position. The best location will depend on your property’s layout, existing electrical installation and Energex requirements. Every home is different, so it’s important to have the work assessed by a qualified electrician.

What happens if my switchboard isn’t in a compliant location?

A non-compliant switchboard location can delay electrical upgrades, increase installation costs and create difficulties when Energex requires access to your electricity meter – they will often provide a DEFECT NOTICE upon inspection.  If you are having only some minor works completed on your switchboard, then often you do not need to relocate the board. However, more major changes will require the switchboard to be updated to meet all safety and legal requirements.

Example of Minor Works: Additional Tariff, Load Change, Solar Connection

Example of Major Works: Consumer Mains, Meter Panel Replace, Property Pole Relocation

How do I know if my switchboard complies with current requirements?

The easiest way is to have a qualified electrician inspect your switchboard. They’ll check its location, accessibility, condition and whether it complies with current Queensland electrical requirements and Energex guidelines.

Does every home need an accessible switchboard?

Yes. Whether your home is older or newly built, the switchboard should remain safely accessible for maintenance, emergency isolation and future upgrades. Good accessibility also makes it easier to carry out electrical work without unnecessary disruption.
