An earth stake is there for your protection against an electrical shock!

When it comes to your home or business, few components are as important as your electrical safety. The earth stake is a critical component to help avoid serious injury, along side safety switches.  At Fully Wired Electrical Services, we regularly install and upgrade earthing systems to ensure homes across Brisbane stay safe, compliant, and protected.

What Is an Earth Stake?

An electrical earth stake (or grounding rod) is a metal rod, typically made of copper-coated steel, driven into the ground outside your property and usually near the switchboard. It’s job is simple:
to safely redirect electrical faults into the earth, making it dissipate and preventing dangerous voltages from building up in your property.

Why Is an Earth Stake Important?

A properly installed and functioning earth stake helps to:

  • Protect from electric shock
  • Ensure safety switches (RCDs) operate correctly
  • Reduce fire risk caused by electrical faults
  • Stabilise your electrical system during storms or surges
  • Keep your home compliant with Australian electrical standards

Without effective earthing, any fault can cause metal appliances or fixtures to become live!

How Do You Know If Your Home Has One?

You may have an earth stake if:

  • You can see a metal rod near your switchboard or meter box
  • Your home has had a recent switchboard upgrade
  • Your property uses a traditional MEN (Multiple Earthed Neutral) system

However, earthing systems vary between properties, especially older Brisbane homes.
The only reliable way to confirm is through a licensed electrician’s inspection.

INSPECTION AND COMPLIANCE:

Our team provide a thorough inspection of the earth stake and check for compliance and functionality as part of our Switchboard Inspections. Read more HERE and organise a visit.

Reasons Why An Earth Stake Can Be Non-Compliant

  • Location – eg not accessible by Energex or Electricians
  • Condition – eg rusted or degraded
  • Functionality – eg non continuity of main earthing conductor
  • Size – eg the size of the cable to the earth is suitable

NON compliant Earth Stake – Poor Condition                         Example of a Compliant Earth Stake
